CHAPTER ELEVEN
CHRISTIAN ENDED up hitching a ride most of the way back to town. He walked to the motel, checked the bike, checked his doorway, then checked them both again a bit more frantically; the key wasn’t there. Fuck. Hunter must have left it that morning but Christian had left it out all day, and somebody must have come and picked it up. But the keychain said Triumph, there was a Triumph bike parked right in front of his door… what kind of asshole would just walk away with the key? Stealing the bike, okay, that would make sense. But taking just the key was fucking annoying.
Maybe some good Samaritan had turned it in to the office, he figured, but when he went to check they said they didn’t have anything. He opened his motel room door, checked the floor in case Hunter had somehow slipped it inside… nothing. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. He just wanted to get away. He was done with all of it, and he’d used up all of his fucking self-control and there just wasn’t anything fucking left. “Fuck!” he roared, slamming his palms against the wall. The volume didn’t help, but it was probably responsible for the polite tapping on his door moments later. “Son of a bitch,” he muttered. A noise complaint? Yeah, that felt about right.
He yanked the door open. Oh. Maybe not about the noise. “Hunter. Wait, what are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be at the picnic?”
“Aren’t you?” Hunter asked.
“I think we both know I’m not supposed to be out there.” A ray of hope pierced the darkness in Christian’s mind. “There’s no chance you still have my bike key, is there?”
Hunter reached into his pocket and pulled the key out, but he didn’t extend his hand to return it.
Christian wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or annoyed. “Okay, thanks,” he said, reaching for it.
But Hunter pulled his hand away.
Christian wanted to punch him in the face. He really, really didn’t have the strength for whatever the fuck Hunter was up to. But he also didn’t have the strength to get the shit kicked out of him by an angry martial-arts expert, so he just stood there instead.
“You need to talk to somebody,” Hunter finally said.
“Somebody specific?” Or was this one more of Hunter’s never-ending attempts to get Christian to go to a counselor? Well, not never-ending, because they had ended pretty damn quickly when Christian had fucked Hunter’s sister. And remembering that little detail made Christian a bit more understanding of Hunter’s current bitterness.
“Somebody next door,” Hunter said. “We were supposed to be having a private meeting, but since you’re here anyway… let’s go.” He stepped backward, making room in the doorway for Christian to get by.
There was enough room to close the door, if Christian moved fast. He could slam it shut, fall on the bed, cover his ears with pillows, and get some fucking sleep. Instead, he followed Hunter out of the room like an obedient fucking puppy.
